Originally from Rainworth in Nottinghamshire, Stephen is the eldest son of a coal miner. When growing up he felt as if he did not fit in, felt different. He was a quiet shy child often bullied by his peers. Leaving school at 16 he worked as a tyre and exhaust fitter in Mansfield. After five years working there, he joined the coal board and worked as a miner. At the age of 24 Stephen started suffering from a heart condition which led to him changing occupations and leading him down a path of performance.
In 1990 Stephen worked for Warner Holidays at Lyme Bay Holiday Park in Seaton, Devon. There he found his passion for entertainment, as his mother said "You've found what you are meant to be". After two seasons Stephen was offered a position for Butlin's in a holiday hotel in Scarborough.
Getting married and having children was another change in direction but now his children are all adults Stephen is back doing what he loves.
Stephen has acted for many years with appearances in television programmes and films. At the age of 59 Stephen decided to go back into further education and enrolled with Coventry University Scarborough Campus to expand his knowledge in Acting. This course is unique as it is partnered with the Stephen Joseph Theatre Scarborough and is led by industry professionals.
Stephen has never been conventional with his approach to his career path in this business we call show. Most people go from performance to management, Stephen has done it in reverse. And now working with actors that are younger than his own children he has become an inspiration to a whole new generation of performers.
